“Sunday Go to Meetin’ Time” (1936)

Hoo boy! While you can make some arguments about how the other “Censored Eleven” aren’t really as bad as they’ve been made out to be, there really is no justification one could make for this one. Almost all of the gags are based entirely on African American stereotypes, without even a hint of subversion. So not only is this cartoon racist, but it lacks the imagination to be even creatively racist; it’s just tired, boring gags. On top of that, the cartoon’s premise is uninspired, and isn’t properly developed in the slightest. Other cartoons would do the same premise much more creatively and fleshed out. The lone saving grace is that the titular song is actually quite pleasant to listen to and memorable, but everything else is so bad, it’s not even worth it.
