This sequel to the remarkably entertaining Piranha 3D strips away everything that made the original so much fun. Alexandre Aja’s absence is greatly missed. Everything is a downgrade; the humor, the gore, the characters and even the self-awareness. This feels less like a film, and more like a series of random events and set pieces barely taped together. By the time the film’s big set piece of killer piranhas in a water park rolls around, the film has completely given up on things like consistency and structure. Christopher Lloyd and Ving Rhames return for humorous minor cameos, but are tossed to the sideline for a horribly unfunny extended David Hasselhoff cameo. Not one of the worst films ever made, but it’s definitely not good.
