This feels like it should work. All the pieces are there. The premise is fantastic. The death and torture scenes are unique and creative. And the antagonist is a real menacing presence. The film’s main issue, sadly a pretty major one, is the piss-poor directing. The film’s attempts to be stylistic come across as jarring and off-putting, and feels like a desperate effort to make it stand out. The pacing and editing are both exceptionally poor, and the film’s first act is appallingly bad. While not a terrible film by any means, as the film’s second and third acts are passable, this film could’ve been so much better if the director had dialed down the attempts to be “stylish.”
