This film does exactly what a horror remake should do; take a mediocre or bad original film with a great premise, and improve upon it. The film’s pacing flows a lot more smoothly here, the characters are much better written, and the acting is also a lot better. This film also understands one of the benefits of torture porn; namely that if it’s directed at characters that we want to see die, the audience will rightfully cheer on the sadistic violence. While I wish some of the kills had been a touch more creative, this doesn’t hinder what I feel to be an atmospherically chilling, brutal and tense horror film, that is definitely not for the faint of heart.
