“Raging Bull” (1980)

I’ll admit, it can be daunting going into a film this universally praised. I mean, what if I don’t like it? What if my expectations are simply too high? This might be why I was hesitant to watch this film until now. But now that I’ve finally seen it, I can safely say that this is a truly great film (shocker, right?). It’s a brutal, engrossing character study of a complex, and deeply flawed man. Robert De Niro disappears in the lead role. The other actors are great. Martin Scorsese’s direction is impactful. The writing’s amazing. What more can I say; it’s just great. It’s not a pleasant watch, but it’s a captivating drama, and has earned its place as a truly iconic motion picture.
