“Dragged Across Concrete” (2018)

At a length of 159 minutes, this crime thriller is a real slow burn, which includes scenes that you know could’ve been cut, but you don’t mind that they’re there. The movie would feel incomplete without them. This is a film with a large and diverse cast of characters, and the film takes its time so that we understand who they are, and what their motivations are. Because we get to know these characters so well, when the inevitable explosion of violence rears its head, it feels more like a sucker punch to the gut. It may not be perfect; some of the dialogue is on-the-nose and lacking in subtlety for instance; but overall this is an incredible, bold, and hypnotizing experience.
