Filmed on a shoe-string budget of $7,000, this film, despite its rather simplistic concept, is a unique and enjoyable debut feature from a talented filmmaker. Even when the film is less than stellar, due to a weird edit, a shot that doesn’t look quite right, or a filmmaking decision that was obviously made due to budget constraints, you can still sense the passion that Robert Rodriguez had for the project. It never feels lazy or incompetent. And unlike most directorial debut indie films, this film actually has personality without feeling like it’s trying too hard. The action is good, the film moves at a fast pace, and the characters are just fine. A must-see for indie aficionados, and especially for aspiring filmmakers.
