The film’s concept of a soap opera writer being trapped inside of his own show’s universe is one rife with opportunity. Which is such a shame that the film never truly capitalizes on it. The film is at its strongest when it playfully spoofs or mocks soap conventions. Sadly, the film thought it would be more interesting to focus on a romance plot that was boring and uninteresting. And the rules of how this universe operate feel distractingly inconsistent. John Candy is a welcome presence, and some scenes are funny, but after watching it, you can definitely understand why time has forgotten this film. Not a bad film, but one heck of a missed opportunity, especially with such a talented comedian in the lead.
